Abstract
The report describes the work undertaken to develop a real-time dynamic simulator for renewable energy conversion systems. It presents the fully dynamic models of a wind energy converter (WECS) and micro-hydro converter (MHCS). The simulator hardware consists of a DC drive and DC motor, that acts as a prime mover and provides a shaft torque for a grid connected, induction generator. The simulator software models the 'front end' to provide a torque demand for the DC drive. The report will also focus on the requirements of the software communication between the drive and the model, focusing on a novel use of serial communication with the Simulink Real-Time Workshop. The paper concludes with a summary of the achievements met by the simulator, focusing on the novelty and flexibility of such a system.
