It is often thought that the terms "workload management" and scheduling are synomnous. This is not the case. Scheduling is in fact just one out of five important aspects of cluster workload management. This paper discusses the role of scheduling within the wider area of workload management, and illustrates how scheduling is interwoven with the other components. In addition, we show how to apply these principles to real world challenges of building and managing clusters.
