An engineering process is only as good as its ability to meet market needs. In the evangelical world of software process models, it is easy to forget that process and technology are only a means to an end. Business dynamics, product evolution, and market demands significantly impact engineering priorities. This article identifies how business values change during product evolution and maps development process models to product stages based on the changing values. This lets us evaluate the consequences of engineering processes from a business perspective.
