Abstract
Visualizing large uncorrelated point data sets with regular volume rendering produces unsatisfying results due to low spatial resolution. For time-dependent data, available main memory can be a limiting factor as well. To deal with these large time-varying data sets, a hierarchical representation is created and quantized relative coordinates are stored. During rendering the compressed data is accessed out of core, and particle positions are interpolated using B-splines. Traversing the hierarchical structure for each frame can trade-off rendering speed for image quality, achieving interactive rates for data sets with millions of points.
